We might envision a bigger house, more holidays, a faster car and maybe a job with more status. We might see ourselves looking quite different to how we look now &#8211; more toned, slimmer, better dressed.</p>
<p>Such ideas concentrate on things we&#8217;d like to have. Unless we have a vision of how things will look when we&#8217;ve reached the lofty heights of our personal success, we&#8217;ve little chance of ever getting there.</p>
<p>But before we can have all these great things, we have to be prepared to make some changes. As Albert Einstein said, &#8220;Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.&#8221; And so, continue doing what you&#8217;re doing right now, and you&#8217;ll continue having what you&#8217;ve always had.</p>
<p>We need to not only massively change the way we do things, but also massively change the way we think. Only then will we make big steps forward in what we have. Not a big revelation then to realise that a smidgen of exertion will be needed to get the things we want to have. The relationship between giving and getting is well understood! Yet simply doing the work won&#8217;t automatically give us the lifestyle we&#8217;re after.</p>
<p>We accomplish success by embracing the thoughts and behaviour of a successful person &#8211; assuming the characteristics and values of a winner before we&#8217;ve actually become one. If the objective is to drop four dress sizes in twelve months, then for a time we have to prioritise an exercise routine and pay attention to what we eat.</p>
<p>Until the exercise time&#8217;s been reached, leisure activities are off-bounds. Success dictates that reward will follow effort. Adopting a good mental attitude to the things that have to be done will result in much faster weight loss.</p>
<p>Success can&#8217;t come by itself. We&#8217;ll get knocks along the way, so a strong mental stance is paramount.</p>
<p>If we look at how others have reached their goals (in autobiographies and such-like) we can build some resilience. A familiar thread runs through each of their stories &#8211; that what they have now is largely the result of what they did and who they became before the gravy train started to roll. By concentrating on becoming the person we need to be, the effort we have to do will be more enjoyable and bring us the things we want to have much sooner.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Both my wife Katie and I were desperate to reduce our weight, so we had a little heart to heart about why we wanted to be thinner, and what that would mean to us. It was amazing, but we really didn&#8217;t aspire to anything that remarkable. Having more oomph to play with the kids was Katie&#8217;s number one goal. She wanted to become more self-assured when undressing in our bedroom too.</p>
<p>My main wish was to be able to purchase clothes that fit properly! We have a 3 storey townhouse, and I wanted to run up the stairs without panting by the top floor!</p>
<p>We did our research, and found that as well as considering how we look, we also have to consider how we feel about ourselves. Those of us who are obese tend to have a very low self-image. It&#8217;s a popular assumption that reducing weight will make everything in life good again. Katie and I can really relate to this, and thought you might appreciate our take on things.</p>
<p>Medical research tells us that our sub conscious mind has no scope to differentiate between actual reality, and perceived reality. This means it &#8216;tells&#8217; our conscious mind anything that pre-dominates. Repeat a concept often enough and that surfaces as the overriding idea.</p>
<p>Take a little time to ponder on that one&#8230; For years we&#8217;ve probably been programming our mind about how over weight we are. So instead of telling our subconscious what we don&#8217;t want, we should tell it what we DO want.</p>
<p>We should also make the rewards of being a lighter person our focal point &#8211; and not the effort it takes to get there. Firstly, we compiled a list of activities and such like that being too heavy made very difficult: They were things such as having fun, dancing, walks on the beach, more confidence, better sex, sports activities etc.</p>
<p>Next we conjured up visions of ourselves on vacation, looking fantastic in our new summer gear. Everyone approved of our good looks. Everything was fantastic!</p>
<p>Accordingly, both of us are a lot lighter and fitter &#8211; though not as thin as rakes! By the same token, we&#8217;re feeling terrific and life really has become fun!</p>

<p>In All Honesty, Is It Really That Bad? Maybe you&#8217;re not classed as obese, but you&#8217;re probably somewhat overweight if you&#8217;re reading this. Around seven tenths of people in America can be classed as having weight problems. That&#8217;s over two hundred million! What&#8217;s more, it&#8217;s not a great deal less elsewhere. Yet we don&#8217;t wish to win this race&#8230;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been revealed that in Britain today, one quarter of all adults are a minimum of 33lbs too heavy (and are therefore classed as obese.) But look at this &#8211; Some predictions forecast this figure will rise to 90 percent in forty years time.</p>

<p>You&#8217;re Not To Blame For Being Fat! Let&#8217;s begin by qualifying that: That doesn&#8217;t mean we&#8217;re saying you can&#8217;t do something about it. What we&#8217;re actually claiming is you&#8217;ve either been misinformed or uninformed!</p>

<p>When it comes to weight loss, we can accelerate our plan by combining regular exercise with a healthy diet. Some people don&#8217;t like the idea of having to exercise, but even a little exercise done often enough will produce benefits. In addition to weight loss, stronger muscles are built when we exercise regularly.</p>
<p>In terms of metabolic rates, fat is slow, but muscle is more vigorous. So we need muscle to burn a greater number of calories up more speedily. Individuals with more muscles deplete their calorific intake sooner. We&#8217;ll also see an improved body shape and tone when our muscle is developed.</p>
<p>Start by introducing exercises on a gradual basis. One of the best ways to fit more exercise into an already busy life is to incorporate it into things you already do. Avoid taking the lift or escalator &#8211; undertake to walk up at least three flights of stairs instead. Deliberately leave your motor some distance from your workplace, and do the last bit on foot. Whenever you take public transport buy a ticket for three quarters of the journey and then walk the rest.</p>
<p>Your goal should be to take some form of exercise five times a week. You can do short bursts of exercise, but 30 minutes or more is generally thought to be best. Doing a variety of exercises will relieve the boredom. That way you&#8217;re much more likely to stick with it.</p>
<p>Getting fit and more toned doesn&#8217;t have to be painful. Team up with someone else and make your exercise routine fun. Several times a week, get outdoors and go for a walk. Brisk walking on a regular basis can do much more for us than weight loss alone.</p>
<p>Your chances of having a stroke or heart problems will reduce if you become more active. Cancer of the colon is minimised too. We can lower our cholesterol and our chances of getting type two diabetes. We&#8217;re also likely to maintain a more stable mental attitude and find sleeping easier at night. All of which illustrates great reasons to get yourself going!</p>
<p>When going for a walk, pick out some comfy clothes. Several tee-shirts and a fleece are better than one heavy item. You might like to invest in some specialist footwear. Whether you choose boots or shoes, buy a pair that support your feet well.</p>
<p>Go through the following checklist when you&#8217;re about to get going: Stand up straight, weight evenly distributed. Relax your shoulders and draw in your tummy. Do be sure to warm yourself up well. Rolling your shoulders and stretching helps, as do a few squats and knee lifts. And last but not least, march on the spot for a couple of minutes and then off you go!</p>
<p>Try to develop a good walking technique &#8211; land on the heel and push off from the toe. At the end of your walk, warm down by doing the same routine you did to warm-up, but in reverse. Your first walks need only be a mile or so, and then increase the distance each week. Walking is something that everyone can do. However if you&#8217;re at all concerned, take medical advice.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve probably all heard about the power of association. There&#8217;s a tangible link between the way we behave and the men and women we have friendships with. But we might have thought the similarities would reveal themselves in our attitudes and personal tastes &#8211; for instance we often support the same institutions and vote for the same parties as our friends.</p>
<p>Lately though, studies are claiming that we will have more tendency to be overweight if we hang around with others who are overweight. We will eat more when in the company of good friends who eat more. A small study undertaken in America found that overweight kids and teenagers ate more when they were eating with a friend who was also overweight, than when they ate with a normal weight child.</p>
<p>In fact more was eaten by all sizes when in the company of friends. Although the most food of all was eaten when two heavy chums were teamed up. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported on this research. It illustrated the part friends play in the actions of each other.</p>
<p>Frankly, having more relaxed habits when with friends is not a big surprise. We all feel more awkward in strange company. With friends, we gain a sort of unspoken permission for our actions. In a subconscious way, we permit them to define tolerable behaviour.</p>
<p>The study took 65 young people of mixed weights and observed them for 45 minutes. Some were with a friend, and some with a stranger. They were given games to entertain themselves, along with snack food, fruit and veg.</p>
<p>The familiar couples put away more food than the unfamiliar ones. But the overweight pairs who were familiar with each other got through the most. And the variations were considerable, as shown below.</p>
<p>The heavier friends together consumed an average of almost 750 cals each. Heavy kids with standard weight chums ate just under 450 cals, and standard weight kids ate approx 500 cals whatever weight their mate was. Similar &#8216;friendly&#8217; peer pressure is also evident when kids decide whether to start smoking.</p>
<p>A child&#8217;s social network then is significant in determining their eating habits. What this means is kids can be influenced to eat less as well as more. A good argument for teaching sound nutrition!</p>

<p>Keeping my weight at the right level has always been a challenge. I felt sure that it would continue to be that way for the rest of my life. But in fact I learned a &#8217;secret&#8217; that&#8217;s changed my life! I am now lighter at fifty one than I was at thirty one.</p>
<p>How can this be? I simply keep an eye on my blood-sugar levels. I used to hanker after something sweet as my energy sapped around late afternoon. And so my solution was to eat a handful of biscuits or a piece of cake. This of course just added more layers of fat to my stomach and thighs.</p>
<p>Not only that, but in addition fat was amassing in my arteries and elsewhere &#8211; quite a scary thought. These days, I hardly ever feel drained or half-starved. My husband would say I&#8217;m a little easier to live with &#8211; seems my moods are more balanced as well! And joy of joys, I can sleep through the night.</p>
<p>This transformation has come through eating something small on a very regular basis. I used to miss meals during the day several times a week. Then I&#8217;d catch up in the evening, and gorge! This was the worst thing I could do.</p>
<p>Regular moderate consumption is what the body actually needs. By the middle of each day, the rate we metabolise food is at it&#8217;s highest. So early meals are vital, as later meals have a sluggish journey through our system.</p>
<p>Sitting down to have breakfast is now top of my list every morning. I only eat a small amount, which saves me having to tot up the calorific value. (Our stomachs are not massive empty containers &#8211; we should be aware not to overstretch them).</p>
<p>I restrict the amount of grain I eat, and make lunch my most important meal. By late afternoon, a small snack is now all I need take me through to a small evening meal. Each meal has some protein, and some anti-oxidant rich vegetables.</p>
<p>A balanced diet needs fat, but I mainly eat certain &#8216;healthy&#8217; fats. Olive oil, seeds, fish oil and a few nuts all give us our essential fatty acids.</p>
<p>The last thing I changed is my alcohol consumption. I now restrict it to two or three glasses a week. The high temperatures I was experiencing are a rarity now &#8211; a benefit of less alcohol I think! Have I found it difficult? Not when I think of all the benefits it brings. I&#8217;m carrying less weight, have more energy, a clearer and brighter skin, less hormonal challenges &#8211; oh, and better sex too!</p>

<p>Losing weight can be as difficult psychologically as it is physically. It can become a struggle if we have to make family meals; eating our own meagre diet whilst still having to prepare tempting fare for the others. How can we improve our lot, and continue to please the family?</p>
<p>Whatever we serve up, when we&#8217;re aiming to lose weight the first thing we can address is our portion size. Starting a meal with a full plate is very gratifying, so why not buy yourself a smaller plate? Don&#8217;t rush to be the first to start eating. Take your time and chew your food well. This will leave you feeling more satiated, and prevent you from always finishing before everyone else.</p>
<p>Most family meals can be eaten when you&#8217;re dieting, if you restrict the amount of fat and carbohydrate on your plate. Make up for it with lots of vegetables. And avoid the temptation of crusty bread! For seconds, think carefully before you indulge yourself. A small baked apple is fine &#8211; simply leave out the custard or cream.</p>
<p>On the other hand, you can make slimmer&#8217;s meals for everyone. No-one need suspect they&#8217;re eating a low-cal meals with some of the recipes you can use. Use lemon juice, garlic and fresh herbs for a really scrummy pasta dish. Tinned tomatoes are a great base for the sauce, and no oil is needed if you stir in a little low fat creme fraiche before serving.</p>
<p>Pick your meat and dairy items carefully when you shop. There can be a big difference in the calorific value of different beef products for example. The rest of your family will profit from less saturated fat, even if they don&#8217;t have weight issues. For a low-cal high-protein meal, serve turkey or chicken and stick to the skinless breast for yourself. Potatoes can be nice and filling for slimmers &#8211; just buy ones with a creamy texture. You won&#8217;t need to add butter before serving then.</p>
<p>Whole wheat or oats are the best cereals to buy &#8211; and choose ones that don&#8217;t have any additional sugar. Leave cereal bars alone too. Even these have far too many calories for the amount of food you&#8217;re eating. There are also many &#8216;hidden&#8217; cals in a lot of drinks. If you drink cola or other sodas, always buy the diet varieties.</p>
<p>Wine and beer can be very fattening, so try to limit it where possible. Tomato juice with Worcestershire sauce and ice has a good kick and makes a change. As apple juice is particularly strong in flavour, water it down half and half and serve it in a wine glass for more sophistication!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s obvious that we&#8217;re not going to lose weight if we continue as we are. But it&#8217;s amazing how a small shift here and there can dramatically help along the way.</p>
